What should I expect from my consultation?
During your consultation, you will learn about PRP and discuss your needs and concerns. Dr. Nabil Fakih will carefully examine your entire face and he will determine what type of treatment you need. For most facial treatments, Dr. Nabil Fakih recommends that your skin is optimally prepared prior to your treatment; preparation before the PRP is integral to the safest, most effective treatment. After your consultation we will take photographs for your medical record and we will discuss the surgery fees and scheduling dates. You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. Also provide information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
Injections involving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are the latest wave in facial rejuvenation. Facial rejuvenation with PRP is also known as PRP facial rejuvenation. PRP is blood that contains higher concentrations of platelets and growth factors than normal blood. These substances stimulate stem cells to produce collagen and blood vessels, in turn slowing or reversing the signs of aging.
Platelets are the key are key actors of hard and soft tissue repair mechanisms. They provide the essential growth factors (FGF, PDGF, TGF-ß , EGF, VEGF, IGF) involved in:
• Stem cell migration, differentiation and proliferation.
• Stimulation of cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells, to induce new extracellular matrix deposition and neo-vascularization.
Science supports the use of PRP for the augmentation and regeneration of bone and soft tissues. PRP is the source of concentrated platelet content present in your blood. Apart from assisting blood clotting, platelets also release growth factors that assist the human body to repair itself by stimulating cells to regenerate new tissue. Today, platelet rich plasma can easily be separated from blood, through a process of centrifugation. Using your concentrated plasma permits the body to heal faster and more efficiently. Because your plasma (autologous) is used, there is no danger of disease transmission. Case studies reported in Europe, England, USA, Japan and South Africa have demonstrated consistent rejuvenation of facial aging, including wrinkling in persons with modest grades of photo or chronological aging. Improvements in skin texture and tone have also been seen. Results are noticeable within 3 weeks with ongoing changes and improvements over the following months, dependent on the health of the patient.
Plasma contains many factors essential for cell survival such as nutriments, vitamins, hormones, electrolytes and proteins. Among the plasma proteins, there are the essential molecules for the coagulation process and generation of the fibrin polymer that will serve as a scaffold for cell migration, differentiation and proliferation.
It is well known that platelets have many functions. Platelets contain important growth factors that, when secreted, are responsible for:
• Tissue regeneration and rejuvenation
• Increasing collagen production
• Recruiting other cells to the site of injury
• Initiating vascular growth
• Inducing cell differentiation
• Bone – mineralization
• Extra cellular matrix formation
• Elimination of donor transmissible infections
• Biological glue: for tissue adhesion especially in skin flaps, bone grafts and trauma
PRP injections are natural & safe
PRP facial injections are minimally invasive and very safe with no scars. No major complications, and as few side effects or allergic reactions are rare. They can be used in multiple areas for dermal rejuvenation. There is enough evidence to show that Platelet Rich Plasma can be used to treat several skin issues such as hair loss, diabetic ulcers, bedsores, thermal burns, superficial and surgical injuries and skin graft donor sites and post-traumatic scars.
Who is an ideal candidate for PRP?
Because PRP facial rejuvenation is a minimally invasive procedure, most adults with signs of aging are good candidates. The fact that it is less invasive makes it an attractive option for elderly patients, since the incisions made in facelift and other invasive facial procedures take longer to heal in older patients. However, it should be noted that PRP injections do have their limits; they cannot make an elderly patient look 30 years old. PRP is best known for its wonderful act of skin rejuvenation. When Dr. Nabil Fakih injects PRP into particular parts of the skin, its high platelet concentration functions as a matrix that stimulates the growth of new collagen, revitalizes skin tissue and hence leads to a naturally smooth and firm skin. As a result, PRP treatment gets rid of wrinkles and creates a smoother skin feel and better natural tone.
The PRP procedure
PRP is basically a natural product produced from your own body. Dr. Nabil Fakih technique ensures a based evidence medicine technique who he activate it with Calcium Chloride and uses an advanced technique to inject in the epidermis to ensure a great result with no pain. Through a simple blood draw (between 50 - 80 ml of blood, equivalent to 10-18 bottles of blood) from an individual into a sterile tube and is placed in a centrifuge and spun in order to separate the blood from the growth factors, platelets and stem cells. Dr. Nabil Fakih ensures a lot of PRP in comparison with others colleagues who they withdraw 1-2 tubes only. This rejuvenative mixture is then micro-injected in areas of the face into the mid to deep dermis of the skin where signs of aging have appeared, such as the areas surrounding the eyes, cheeks, mouth and forehead. As much PRP we inject, as much effect you will have. We offer to do it with Local Anesthesia or with Sedation (by our certified anesthesiologist doctor).
PRP facial rejuvenation can be done with other procedures
Yes. If done alone it can be performed under local anesthesia or sedation. But in many cases, PRP facial rejuvenation is performed with a lower facelift, necklift, or eye surgery and browl lift surgery or rhinoplasty. It can also be combined with fat transfer for a more volumizing effect, and with laser resurfacing.
What to avoid before PRP?
It is vitally important to avoid all blood thinning medications/supplements for 2 weeks prior to surgery. This includes any aspirin or aspirin-containing products as well as any anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen (including Motrin, Aleve and Advil). It is generally fine to be take Tylenol (Acetaminophen). Avoid supplements such as Vitamin E including multi vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids such as fish oil and flax seed oil. All these medications can contribute to bleeding problems following surgery and can increase the amount of bruising.
All our patient are prepared by Dr. Paula Martin-Marfil with the Pre / Post surgical preparation program to enhance a quick recovery. Minor bruising or swelling will last about 2 days if the procedure is performed alone. Most patients look presentable and return to work in 2-3 days. If it is performed in conjunction with laser treatment, recovery will last about a week. If PRP facial rejuvenation is performed with fat transfer, the recovery is about a week.
